Harmony Harris

“The purpose of life is to serve, and to show compassion and the will to help others.” - Albert Schweitzer. My name is Harmony Harris and I am a Trans Health Coordinator at the Ruth Ellis Center. I act as a liaison for the transgender women of color community and health care professionals. Through EIS (Early Intervention) trainings and becoming certified in HIV testing and counseling, I have the proper credentials to effectively navigate care for transgender woman. Starting off as a Community Health Worker for Henry Ford Health System, I was able to see the disparities with transgender healthcare. Through my position at the Ruth Ellis Center, I am able to provide pivotal resources and informational tools for trans women of color that they can utilize to live healthier lives. Every week, my colleague and I facilitate group sessions with trans women of color from our community. We touch base on five subjects; wellness, mental health, HIV/AIDS, transitioning, and sexual health. I help to bridge the gap between the lost voices of trans women of color and their medical necessities. Furthermore, outside of my work-life, I am a part-time student at Wayne State University pursuing my Bachelors of Arts in Communication Studies. In short, I am a transgender woman of the community, working within the community. Aiming to end stigma surrounding transgender women of color by being a role model and doing the work that is needed for all marginalized individuals is my main goal. I believe that furthering my education will assist me in breaking barriers and opening up greater opportunities for other trans women.
